1. Assumptions
- People in general are in big trouble when it comes to health.
- People’s choices can make a positive (or negative) difference.
- We can positively influence people’s choices by promoting healthy life management.
- By positively impacting the health of our Members the heartache of preventable disease will be thwarted.
2. Our Mission
To promote healthy life management through research-informed, biblically based educational programs and resources.
3. Rationale for Healthy Life Management
- honor God,
- equip ourselves to serve Him more effectively, and
- allow ourselves to redirect financial resources from treatment of preventable disease and injury to various forms of ministry.
4. Purpose
To promote Biblical wholeness through leadership, resources, and programs of excellence that will guide, educate and inspire, enabling people to fully invest their time, talent, energy and finances in building the Kingdom of God.
5. Position on nutrition
We advocate that people - especially those who are obese, and those who are high risk for, or who have been diagnosed with heart disease, diabetes or cancer - move toward a richly diversified, whole foods, plant-based diet – including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, healthy oils, beans and nuts. Moderate changes in the typical American diet have been found to be insufficient when it comes to reducing risk for, or for reversing, major disease.
We believe that while we are called to take care of our bodies, there is no single “biblical” diet. We have a range of freedom in our selection of foods. The question is not whether a particular food is permitted, but whether it is wise to consume certain types of foods - especially with the frequency and in the large meal portions characteristic of our nation.
Our present position is supported by 1 disease reversal and the reduction/elimination of risk indicators in members who participate in our initiatives; 2 statistics, worldwide, showing the relationship between levels of animal product consumption and the incidence of major disease; and 3 a large and growing body of scientific studies.
6. Position on exercise
Even a minimal (moderate) exercise plan – e.g., walking 2 fast-paced miles per day, 5 days per week has significant health benefits. Exercise programs that are extreme in frequency, duration and intensity can lead either to diminished benefits or to increased risk for heart disease and cancer, apparently due to oxidative stress. A counter to oxidative stress combines adequate rest, nutrition (increased intake of antioxidants) and hydration.
A recommended basic exercise health maintenance program combines aerobic exercise (30 minutes per day), strength training (at least two 30 minute periods per week), and stretching.
An ideal exercise program for lifelong health and performance requires one hour per day distributed across 6-dimensions – 1) aerobic, 2) strength, 3) power, 4) stretching/range of motion, 5) skilled movement (for balance, coordination, agility) and 6) brain exercise
7. Position on sickness and healing
- Disease and death (spiritual and physical) can ultimately be traced to man’s rebellion against God.
- The immediate cause of disease is not necessarily the sin of the afflicted individual or his family.
- While we read in Scripture that Satan is “about like a roaring lion, seeking whom to devour,” and that “we battle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers,” disease is not necessarily a direct result of demonic influence.
- God can and sometimes does, heal through His supernatural powers; He also works through natural means. At times, a disease may be rooted in an unhealthy lifestyle, and may persist because an individual has not changed the lifestyle that brought about the condition. We can, at times, participate in our own healing through changes in attitude and lifestyle. Health professionals can be key instruments for healing, as is evidenced in lives saved, and quality of life restored through various interventions.
- There will be times when, for reasons the Lord has not revealed, a person seeking to be free of a disease will not be healed or, a person will not be free of repeated bouts of illness of one type or another.
- God is sovereign and omnipotent. He is not bound by our choices, dependent upon our faith, or obligated by the words we utter and the outcomes we envision. God does what He wills, and what He does is always consistent with His unchanging and perfect nature. While God is not the author of evil, and tempts no one with evil, God is able to use all things - even the work of Satan and the sinful acts of human beings - to fulfill of His purposes and to glorify His Name.
8. Statement of Faith
- We believe that there is one God eternally existing in three Persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
- We believe that the Bible is God’s written revelation to man and that it is verbally inspired, authoritative, and without error in the original manuscripts.
- We believe in the deity of Jesus Christ - His virgin birth, sinless life, miracles, death on the cross to provide for our redemption, bodily resurrection and ascension into heaven, present ministry of intercession for us, and His return to earth in power and glory.
- We believe in the personality and deity of the Holy Spirit, that He performs the miracle of new birth in an unbeliever and indwells believers, enabling them to live a godly life.
- We believe that man was created in the image of God, but because of sin was alienated from God. That alienation can be removed only by accepting through faith alone God’s gift of salvation which was made possible by Christ’s death
